Circles In A Yellow Room came out of a particularly creative period in early 2019 resulting in a burst of compositions written by Freeman and recorded later that year. Freeman’s vibraphone is his yellow room. His liner notes describe some of his experiences during the long delay caused by the pandemic and how this production helped occupy his time.

"Swinging sounds that are reminiscent of vintage Cal Tjader sessions…irresistible grooves. Oye!"
Jazz Weekly November 1, 2018 –George Harris
Venetian Blinds is a tip of the hat to Tito Puente and Bobby Hutcherson. When Tito Puente rolled his vibes in during the early days of the Palladium, people would say, “Here comes Tito with those venetian blinds!”— referring to the strung-together bars of the instrument. Four of the tracks on this recording were written for El Rey (the King) Tito Puente: Those Venetian Blinds, Mambo Kings, Night Crawlers, and Qué Tal Tío (What’s Up Uncle). Another three go out to the late vibraphonist and NEA Jazz Master Bobby Hutcherson: Clutch the Hutch, Bobby Land, and House of Vibes.

Mark describes his music as "modern listening music" saying, "nothing is one thing anymore". This eclectic music is a contrasting mix of old and new bluesy jazz with an underlying carribean and Latin influence. Using Latin rhythms as a vocabulary for his melodies along with social and polictical commentary for his drum like lyrics, that are influenced by Eddie Jefferson, Mark melds these components into a cohesive whole for Stretching the Truth. Highlights include the striking bolero Old Eyes, Buicktown, a tribute to Mark's home town of Detroit, Harlem Night Music, a percussion only piece featuring Bill Goodwin, Louis Bauzó along with Mark, and the crowd pleasing Blue Boogaloo.
